self righteousness 05 Oct 2003
I was serving in the verdugo hills 1st ward and had just got done training Elder Webster who went off to serve in Monteray Mexico. Pres. Swenson charged me to make him the best trained missionary out of the Ca Arc Mission cause he was going where Pres. went. I met the challenge. My new companion was Elder Jacobson. He was from N. Salt Lake and I was like, oh no not another Utah Elder! I thought he was so self righteous cause I had never seen an Elder spend more time on his knees or writing in his Journal. He had been an Armenian Elder for the first 10 months of his mission. He worked so hard! I thought he was gonna be a wuss cause he seemed to be very intellecual. I was a jock, a star soccer player from Texas and Washington. He humbled me so much! One day I was exhausted and was laying in bed ready to retire for the night. My comp wanted to plan. I said go ahead Elder you have my permission to plan by yourself. I don't feel I'm the Sr. comp we are equals. He forced me to stay awake and I remembered that Vincent Gatan had come to Gen Conf. with his niece Elsie Facun. I said lets tract Honolulu st. all day tommorrow. The next day at around 10 am we knocked on the Facun's door and Sis. Facun was so excited to see us! She invited us in and called for her uncle. He was happy to see us to. My companion went right into the first disscussion without prayer or dicussing it with me. I was bothered! He taught a wonderful lesson and I taught about the need for baptism in the Plan of Salvation. E. Jacobson went on to talk about prophets and I taught about the Prophet Joseph Smith. My comp went straight to 2 Ne 31 and committed Vincent to Baptism. I was blown away. I had committed several people to baptism on the first discussion but never a 89 year old Catholic man. There was no spirit that I felt. Vincent went on for 20 minutes explaining why he had no need for Baptism. I was so frustraded I stopped him and asked if he really wanted to know if his Heavenly Father wanted him to be baptised. He said he did. I responded the only way you can know for sure is if you ask him. Will you get on you knees and ask him in prayer right now? He said yea I will. I taught him how to address thank and ask in the name of Jesus Christ. He then uttered the most humble prayer I have ever heard a litttle Philipino man utter. "Heavenly Father, do you wnt me to be Baptised? in the name of Jesus Christ amen." We all sat in silence. Tears streamed down my cheeks. I wanted to wait for Vincent to responed we were all on our knees. E. Jacobson spoke first which upset me again! He asked Vincent how he felt. He said he felt really good. I smiled and said, good "will you follow Christ and be baptised?" He said yes. Sister Facun jumped up off her knees and yelled oh uncle are you relly going to be baptised! He looked up at her from his knees and said'Honey I don't joke around when I pray." Who was self righteous. We had a goal as a zone that month that Elder Robinson committed us too. We were one short with Vincent. During his interview we learned that his great nephew Paul Ryan Cabotaje had not been baptised. We flip charted him the discussions and had a 9 yr old ready for interview by the time Elder Terry was done interviewing Vincent. We made our goal. It was truely a miricle...

LDS QUOTE:
"You are a great army of returned missionaries. Go forward with new zeal and determination, and through your example shine the light of the gospel in this troubled world. This is the Lord’s work in which we are engaged. God lives. Jesus is the Christ. We belong to His Church. This is my witness to you in the name of Jesus Christ, amen."
- Elder L. Tom Perry
Ensign, Nov. 2001
