Stories: Tracting

One day in Martinez my companion, Sister Sadler and I were trying to decide what to do to kill time. As usual, she decided we should tract a few homes. Because she knew that I hated tracting, she asked me to prayerfully select the street we would go to. After a short prayer, we looked at the map and I chose 'Brady' drive. It was in a newer subdivision, and we drove around the neighborhood for some time before giving up the search for it. Evidently, it hadn't been built yet, even though it appeared on our map! Sister Sadler asked if I wanted to choose another street, so feeling disgusted and uninspired, I said "let's just do this street. Then we can mark it off on our map, and hopefully never come here again!" (see what a bad attitude I had!)
Well, we got out and started tracting the street which was 'L' shaped. After what seemed like 100 houses and total rejection, even Sister Sadler seemed tired and asked if I wanted to quit. I said, "no, because you'll just want to come back. Let's finish these few streets." On the VERY LAST house (which we had parked next to), a woman named Donna answered the door. We couldn't see her, since she had one of those 'Oakland' security screen doors, but she said that if we wanted to come back and meet her husband, Jack, who was an inactive member we had never heard of before... that we were welcome to. She warned us that he was quite beligerent about the church and had always given missionaries a cold shoulder. We went back, and five months later with another companion (Sister Grant) Jack baptized his wife Donna into the church! Since then they have been to the temple, served as stake missionaries, and in spite of many trials of their faith they are doing well in the church today!
I guess my point is that the Lord knew I needed to be tested in obedience to my companion, and also in my faith. And I have been rewarded ten times over with a lifelong friendship with two awesome people. |
