Hekekia wasn't wearing his helmet 11 Apr 2000
In March 95, Elder Hekekia was with his companion, Elder Thompson. Hek was the DL over the Livermore district of which my companion, Elder Nielson, and I were a part. We had planned on "team-ups" that afternoon and were waiting for the other companionship, Hek/Thompson, to show up. They were several minutes late, when finally, they came to our apartment in panic. Thompson was saying that Hekekia had crashed his bike and he thought that we should take him to the hospital. There was no physical evidence of any wreck, and so we assumed that they were trying to pull the usual prank on the young missionaries. We soon realized that they werent joking. Hekekia soon showed signs of not knowing where he was. He was asking how long he had been on his mission and could only relate the length of his mission to how long ago he had been "Dear John'd." Soon, we realized that he had lost his short-term memory and this is when it became fun! He would constantly ask the same questions over and over. "Hey... what happened?" "How'd we get here?" "How long have I been on my mission?" And he kept looking at his watch. I took away his watch thinking that it would eliminate him looking at it, but then he kept asking where his watch went. Each time we would answer his questions, but it was getting frustrating. So we wrote down all the answers to the usual questions and when he would begin to ask again, we would just pointed at the piece of paper in his hand which contained the answers. He soon began to ask, "Have I read this before?" So we wrote on the top of the paper, "Yes, you have already read this!" It was quite a scene! We soon got him to the hospital, and this is where some of the classic things happened. The nurse was trying to evaluate how bad he was, and asked him who was the President. Hekekia, being the valiant missionary he was, responded with the first president who came to mind. "Benson... no Hunter!" You should have seen the look on the nurses face! Huh? We explained and asked him to recall the president of the country. They then had to do a physical examination and asked him to get into a hospital gown. Following the exam, he kept asking us who took his clothes off, so we decided to have a little fun. Knowing that he wouldnt remember a thing we said, we told him that he had taken his clothes off and he had been streaking down the hallway in the hospital. He would freak out for a few minutes and then ask the same question again. On the way home from the hospital, Hekekia would slip into his President Smartt voice and say, "Elders, Was he wearing his helmet?" Then he would laugh and do it again. Thinking that he was just coming up with a new joke each time. It was a great, very memorable day(except for Hek, whos only memories of the day come from a video tape). The joys of being a missionary are so abundant, right Hek? Hekekia will most likely make a copy of the video tape for you if you wish to view it, although I havent been able to get a copy out of him.
