Reported by Paul D. Durham:

Funeral notice/obit for Robert L. Miller, missionary in the South German Mission from 1969-1971. Served under Pres. Orville Gunther and Pres. Blaine Petersen.

Robert L. Miller, 60, (April 1, 1950—January 4, 2011). Robert Lee Miller, longtime resident of Salt Lake City, passed away in Cottonwood Heights. He was born in Salt Lake City. He was the youngest of three children of Henry and Frances Miller.

He is survived by his children, Jason Johnson (Lara Haehle), Portland; Ryan Miller (Emily), Bountiful; Jaymes Silver, Robbie Miller, and Jenny Miller, all of Salt Lake City; his sister, Georgia Larson, Salt Lake City, and six grandchildren.

Robert attended Skyline High School and graduated in 1968; he served an LDS mission in the South German (Munich) Mission from 1969-1971. He received a B.A. in History (magna cum laude) in 1975 from the University of Utah and a B.A. in Philosophy (cum laude) in 1979. Robert received an M.A. in the History of Science from The Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore) in 1983. He was married to Emma J. White Dugal from 1980 to 1996.

From 1983-1993 he worked in the Special Collections Department at the Marriott Library of the University of Utah and helped develop The Utah Science, Engineering and Medical Archives. Concurrently, he taught at the LDS Institute of Religion as an Adjunct Instructor. From 1993 to 1996 he contributed to the Western Science History Association and from 1996 to the present was employed at Desktop Visual Products as a company representative and technical specialist.

Robert was a gifted researcher, historian and lecturer. He was known for his memory, his good humor and his many friends. At the time of his death, he was close to completing 20 years of research on the life and genius of one of his heroes, the celebrated physicist, Henry Eyring. Nothing surpassed his love for his children.

He was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He enjoyed reading, fishing, movies, music and traveling. One was hard pressed to ever see him without a book in hand.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Frances, and his brother, Richard Miller.

Friends and family are invited to attend a funeral service to be held Saturday, January 22, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at Wasatch 7th Ward LDS Chapel, 8100 S. Top of the World Dr. (3675 East), Cottonwood Heights, UT. A viewing will take place at 9:30 a.m. prior to services. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Robert L.
