Mission Reunions

Reunion Recap - Amado 90-93
On Friday, March 30, there was a reunion held for those missionaries who served under President Luis Amado. Those who attended were treated to a wonderful opportunity to catch up on each others lives and visit personally with President and Sister Amado and also Elder & Sister McKay and Elder & Sister Miles. After general socializing and snacking, we all gathered around and shared our experiences since the mission. The McKays and Amados shared the events and experiences that lead up to the mission evacuation and all those who were there during that time also shared their memories of being pulled out.

President and Sister Amado shared with us that after the North Americans were pulled out, the local leaders and members rallied together to continue the progression of the work - including many who served as full-time stake missionaires. Since that time, the church has continued to grow and now has many stakes and wards where there were previously districts and branches.

It was a time of joyful reunion of friends - brothers and sisters in the gospel. We look forward to the time when we can do it again.

Letter Received from Darrell Hansen, father of Elder Jacob Hansen.
August 25, 1998

I don't know how best to reach President Beckstead or President Ocampo so I am hoping that some one can pass this news to them and others who served with our son Jacob Hansen.

Elder Jacob Allen Hansen served in the Tegucigalpa Mission followed by the Comayaguela Mission when the mission split (Nov 1995 - Nov 1997). This past Saturday, August 22, 1998 Jacob drowned while river boarding in the Salt River near his home in Mesa, AZ.

Jacob was an avid water skier and water sport enthusiast. So this came as a real shock. Of course Jake stayed faithful in the gospel until the last breath of his life. He was currently serving in a singles ward as an asst. to the Elders President. He formerly served as an Elders instructor in our ward. He had been a home teacher to some of the Spanish speaking members of our ward. He was attending a community college and working as a supervisor for a semiconductor equipment cleaning company. He was single and in search of his eternal companion.

I thank both presidents for the attention they gave Jacob as well as all the missionaries and members who made such a significant difference in his life and his testimony. He was truly a joy to have home and continued to serve his family and fellowmen.

Thank you again and may the Lord bless and uplift you in all your efforts.

A letter from President & Sister Bingham regarding the highlights of their mission.
February 21, 1998

Keith Hall has been trying to get us to write something regarding our mission in Honduras. As you know, we were there from July of 1982 until the end of June 1985. I was the mission president during that time. We are now living in Mesa, Arizona. Our address is 4361 Catalina Circle Mesa, AZ 85206 Tel: 602-641-8516 Our E-mail is uservab@juno.com

Probably the one most significant thing that happened during our mission was the dedication of the Guatemala Temple and the effort that was made on April 5, 1985, to take people from Honduras to the temple. Two buses left from Tegucigalpa on that date. The leaders of the twelve districts and their families filled the seats that were not taken by the stake. The district leaders received their endowments and were more qualified to teach the members of their districts and prepare them for the time when a stake could be organized from the district.

Warmest personal regards, VerNon & Bernice Bingham
