Stories: Otaru Apartmnet

By the time I got to Otaru (Dec 1988), there were five missionaries in the third floor of a 70+ year old pink apartment building. It was close to the waterfront near Kitaichi Glass. I can't remember the name but I think it was one of the few buildings that survived the Allied bombings of the Otaru Port area during WWII. The pipes froze constantly in the winter and there were times when we were given special permission to go down to the sento because we had no showers. The toilet was a non-flushing squatter converted to a western style but the three story drop made for entertaining sound effects. Being on the third floor helped minimize the smell, excpet on the days the green tanker came to clean things out. It was a good size place with an LP gas oven and two washing machines. There were a number of glass panels missing out of the windows so the winter breeze of Otaru blew right through the apartment. COming from the bone dry prairie of Canada I think it was the first time I had ever experienced a product like Kabi Killer (The mould remover). |
