Stories: House in Hakodate

I lived in the Hakodate house for 6 months in 1988. That was a great place! I was saddened to hear about the fire that destroyed it as I, like many others, have great memories of that house and area. I'll never forget the renbai (open air market) the house was on. You could always buy fresh meat, veggies, and fruit there. There was a little pizza shop just off the renbai that we would order a pizza from after dendo'ing on Friday nights (all the usual favorites - shrimp, corn, etc :). The delivery guy would show up on a scooter with the pizza suspended from the back of his bike! Some other unique things in Hakodate were the electric trolley car system, haircuts at the prison (nothing like a felon using a razor blade on your neck!), standing at the end of the airport's runway as 747's took off and landed 30 feet over your head, Mt. Hakodate's tram, and so many other cool sites. As I recall, the government opened the train tunnel connecting Hokkaido to the mainland during that time, as well. My greatest memories of the area, however, were the great members and missionaries there. It seemed like the shimai's baptized 2-3 investigators every month! The branch was very much like a family away from home. The missionary work there blossomed like none other that I experienced the rest of my mission. |
