The "Flickertan" 05 Aug 2003
For the missionaries that served between 1985 and 1987, under the fantastic leadership of President V. Loren Chapman, you would of undoubtably have had experience with the Flickertan! We would pray for a half-hour each (nearly an hour most times!) and fast for 24 hours and then end with an approx. hour prayer (half-hour each again). I was not happy about being put into this situation! I got into North Vegas (old 4th ward, Lola and White building) and Elder Freeze and his trainer, Elder Johanneson, had had one of those Flickertans. I was forced into it! But I found it to be one of the best ways to receive the blessings we needed! I have many examples of those blessings, but one that really stands out! When I first got into the area Satan was really there - all over -more than usual. I asked Freeze if he had a Flickertan, the answer was, "yes". I was quite unhappy about it! So we had another one, my first, his second. I met an individual there, Bob Herron on my first week. His wife had been a member all her life and was a faithful, active member of the church. Sis. Herron's dream was to see her husband baptised. I met him and he told me that he had no desire to be a member of the church but did attend some of the social activities with no desire to be united through baptism. Later, when I had the opportunity to train Elder Mike Harmon, we had a flickertan as soon as he got in the field. The following morning, after our Flickertan, I went out to check the mail box and found a note from our landlady telling us to get ahold of Sis. Herron right away. As soon as I picked up the note I felt a spiritual power and new something had happened. We went over and as I touched the door knob to go in I felt another spiritual surge! Sis. Herron was crying almost uncontrolably. We had to sit her down! She said that last night (the night that Elder Harmon and I finished our fast and prayer) that her husband woke up in the middle of the night and was on his knees praying and then woke his wife up and told her he needed to be baptised! He knew that the Church was true! We taught him in a week and the spirit was amazing! At the baptism there was standing room only! The family had waited for this moment for years! I hope that this strengthens others testimonies! I know it still strengthens mine! My wife and I do it still, on occasion! It holds amazing blessings!
