rock of faith 12 Sep 2011
Interesting working the rougher areas of Camden New Jersey and North Philadelphia. Our senior companion-trainers told us to stay away from North Camden at night, it was VERY rough, we often joked if Russians ever bombed the US they'd fly right over Camden because it looked like it was all ready bombed! After the older missionaries finished their missions and we younger zealous missionaries had our run of the Spanish mission (there were 12 of us) some of us decided to work those "rougher" areas anyway. We found people in North Camden flung their doors open to us and begged us to get off the streets! But we found many people to teach, eventually baptising a wonderful young single mother and her children (who later missionaries baptised), named Daisy Rodriguez. She worked in a Tyson chicken factory, I believe. She taught Relief Society the Sunday she was baptised! Amazing woman. She dreamt about our coming to teach her. We were a little incredulous with her story until we realized she was 100% sincere. Anyhow, after one later evening teaching session with her, Elder Stevenson and I were driving home. We stopped at a stoplight and were waiting for the light to turn green. I saw a flicker of movement on my right, and to my horror, saw a teenager with a huge block of concrete and brick standing beside my window, holding it above his head. He brought it down on my passenger side window, I yelled at Elder Stevenson to floor it and get out of there. Luckily the window didn't break. The next morning, we got up and went out to the car to examine it by morning light, expecting to see a crack or at least scratches in the paint on the door. There was not ONE scratch, speck of dust, ANYTHING, NO INDICATION the car had been hit with anything at all. Angels were watching over us constantly, young fools though we might have been, but perhaps courageously and fearlessly foolish empowered with our missionary mantle to go forth and teach the gospel. There are good people in those rough areas, I am glad then we could at least give them a chance to hear and accept the gospel. I know the gospel is true, with all my heart.

LDS QUOTE:
"You are a great army of returned missionaries. Go forward with new zeal and determination, and through your example shine the light of the gospel in this troubled world. This is the Lord’s work in which we are engaged. God lives. Jesus is the Christ. We belong to His Church. This is my witness to you in the name of Jesus Christ, amen."
- Elder L. Tom Perry
Ensign, Nov. 2001
