A Setting-apart Promise from the Lord is Kept 17 Sep 2001
When my stake president set me apart for my mission one of the things that he said in my setting apart was that I would be safe in the traffic down in Peru. I can think of at least 2 instances of where I know that I was watched over. The 1st one, and less dramatic, happened when Elder Mimbela and I had to give a filmstrip presentation in our area (Florencia de Mora) which was about a 20-minute bus ride from our apartment. We were running late because it was rush hour in the evening, so all the "micros" (small buses) were jam-packed with people. the ticket hawkers for the buses were cramming people in as much as they felt safe (in a liberal sense). Now I had ridden micros hanging off the side before, but not with a projector in one arm. As it turned out, I was the very last one that was able to get on the micro (I couldn't very well leave my companion behind!). I had just enough room to get a foot on the bottom step, hold onto the outer railing with one hand and hold onto the projector, scriptures, etc... with the other hand. I thought that that ride would never end, jerking to stops periodically, then jerking ahead as we went back into motion, but we arrived safe and sound w/o incident. The other story is a little more dramatic. I had a "cambio" (transfer) to another city, and as usual, I was to ride most of the night on an "omni" or a larger, greyhound-style bus. There was some delay at the begining while we waited for our driver, but I thought nothing of it. I just made myself as comfortable as possible in a window seat on the right side of the bus, trying to catch some sleep. We were moving along fine when suddenly the bus seemed to drift to the right. I had the distinct feeling that our bus had gone airborne for a moment, then it all broke loose. We tipped to the right side and landed on that side (with me on the bottom). I can still distinctly remember the feeling of the glass window at my side instantaneously shattering as we hit the ground on my side. It was if everything happened in slow motion. There was a sense of peace that came over me and it was almost as if I was watching the event transpire from a safe distance, away from my body. Once we ground to a stop, everyone picked their way out of the bus. After we got out, it was discovered that the driver had fled after the accident; he had been drunk. Another bus came to take us on our way about 2-3 hours later. Miraculously, I only suffered from some bruises in my legs and some other aches and pains for a few days. Another small miracle was that the main luggage compartment was located on the side of the bus that was on the ground but my luggage was placed in a rear compartment so I didn't have to arrange to pick it up later but was able to take it with me. Anyway, I know that the Lord watches over his servants and I know that the setting apart that I received was inspired. Kevin Williams
