reply re "sisto" 21 Apr 2009
Actually the right word is schistomoniasis, and for local residents they called it "sisto". I believe there was an outbreak for this kind of water related illness in Tacloban City and other areas in Leyte during the early or mid 90's.

Sisto? 15 Apr 2009
I'm trying to find information about a disease that I heard about while in the Philippines 20 years ago. I'm spelling phonetically so please forgive me - "sisto". I heard that the Japanese introduced it to the islands during WWII and that the Philippines is the only place in the world that it exists. Any help is appreciated.

Isidro Reyes Javines 1907-1997 23 Jul 2008
I am in search of my grandfather's family. His name was Isidro Reyes Javines, born around 1907. He was from Carigara, and swam out to an American ship as a young man and became an American citizen. I know that he had a brother who was killed when the Japanese attacked and occupied, and he had sisters.

I welcome any information anyone has to offer, even if it's just about the city itself, or the Javines name.

Thank you,
Alea

Researching Mother's lineage 09 Jul 2008
Hello, My mother is Elizabeth Misagal Juanico. She is from Copoocan (I think) but left when she was very young. I believe her father's name was Ferdinand Juanico and I know her mother was Carmen Misagal. She left home when she was about 14 (Carmen died giving birth when she was a child) and headed for Manila, where she met my father. She had full intentions of going back home but somehow never got to it. She ended up getting married, having 3 children there, then, in 1971, left for California never to return. She has since given birth to 5 more children (I was the first born in the U.S.) but regrets never finding out about what happened to her family. I remember her trying to find some of her family members about 20 years ago. Now that I have a child of my own, it's very important to me that she knows her filipino roots (she is half caucasian) as well as educate myself and my other family members. Ultimately, I would love to fly her back to see her hometown before she gets too old:) I would greatly appreciate any type of contact with genuine kin. Thank you!

Help anyone travel to Gamay Samar? 25 Aug 2007
Hi anyone,

I know I am stranger to you guys but I am LDS and I have to try...

I was wondering if you know the fastest way to go to Gamay Northern Samar from Tacloban.

I am from Manila and I have to get my brother's birth certificate in Gamay. I only have Wed, Thursday and Friday next week and I ahve to fly back on Saturday morning to Manila.

From Tacloban, where do I take a bus? How long does it take to get to Gamay?

Do I take the boat?

Any help or info will make my trip less stressful.

Thanks,
Bro. Dulfo

Amelia Roa 11 Jun 2007
I'm the daughter of Amelia Roa, or at least that's what she says her name is, hence my middle name. Her prominent description is the big mole on the tip of her nose. She's about 4'11 with curly hair and light brown eyes. I want to trace her family or relatives because I know it would give her great joy to see them again eventhough she won't tell us about the details of who she really is. I believe that she is in hiding because when my father was still alive, he once said that my mother was disowned by her parents for marrying him and their lives were threatened and they had to disappear. I don't really know the truth about his story but my mother is quite old now, around late 60's and i believe that whatever happened a long time ago, she must have been forgiven by her family already. my mother and father met in manila while she was living with her aunt. sometimes she would mention the place of baybay, leyte and she told us that she was born ni matina, davao. my eldest brother(deceased) was born in Nov. 1958, the second one was born in 1960, and i'm the third child(eldest daughter) born in Nov. 1961. we are ten siblings in the family. i just pray that somebody could help me before it's too late. thank you very much.

Perez de Tagle 17 Mar 2007
Hi Charles Edison! Glad somebody replied. Yes, I am looking for relatives who can provide me with information on my roots. I did some searching in the internet and came across the PTM web. What's LDS?
I am presently working in Saudi Arabia as Plant Manager of a Fiberglass pipe manufacturing company. I was born and grew up in Manila and have been an OFW for 22 years. All the information about our family roots came from my parents who were both Warays. My father was half Filipino half Dutch. His mother's name was Petra Homeres. My mother's ancestor is Oscar Perez de Tagle from San Isidro, Leyte. I once met some of my relatives (Pilpa) in Baybay and the Macariola's in Tacloban.
I wish to communicate with my relatives. I hope you or anybody you know can help me. Thank you PTM.

Thank you and best regards,

Charles Pilpa Giere

Oscar Perez de Tagle 16 Mar 2007
Dear Everyone,

My great great grandfather is Oscar Perez de Tagle. He had a daughter named Adre who married a Macariola. She had a daughter (can't remember her name) who married a Pilpa and they had 3 children. One of them is my mother Lily Macariola Pilpa Giere.

My name is Charles Pilpa Giere and I think this website is great.

To Catbalogan members 30 Nov 2006
Hello everyone. I am a member here in the United States.

I am posting this message on behalf of my sister-in-law's family who are non- members of our church.

The family lives in Catbalogan, Samar and their 14 year old daughter, Janine Ong Paulin is a victim of crime in that area. She was raped, murdered and set her body on fire to cover up the investigation. It happened just 2 weeks ago. The family is also conducting their own investigation because there was a cover up in all the reports submitted. I can't give more details since this is a very sensitive case.

I ask the members of our church in that area to please include the family in your prayers as they seek justice for the death of their beloved daughter.

And we also ask anyone, especially our church members in that area who could provide us information or saw Janine coming from school to send us emails that would help solve the case. Please email us at .. JusticeforJanine@yahoo.com.ph All emails will be confidential.

We'll appreciate whatever information anyone could provide. For missionaries assigned in the area, I guess this is a good missionary work.

Thank you.

Hello to my friend in Kanaga 01 May 2006
Hello my name is Barry Hansen, I live in Canada. I had the pleasure of being a part of a summer missions trip in 1984 to help build the National Heroes Institue. Ever since my departure, the People of Kanaga and the Philippines have never been far from my thoughts and prayers. It saddens me to hear of the hardship you have been through, the mudslides, typhoons and constant fear from the unstable goverments and rebels. I wish and pray there would be peace and prosperity for all of you in Kanaga, and Leyte , and the Phillipines. I am often curious if my coming to your fine country was of any benefit to you, has the National Heroes Institute been a blessing, has it improved your life and your walk as Christians? Is it even still standing? God Bless, Barry Hansen
