Elders Anderson and Milloy took part in the first ever recorded baptism for our church in Nunima Iqua, a small fishing village, located on the frozen tundra at the mouth of the Yukon River. The referral came from Susan Fraser and her son, Mike, both converts to the church who became aware of Misty Richardson’s desire to learn more about the church. The Elders set out early in the morning on Nov. 15th with a prayer in their hearts. They got on a small bush plane that took them from Anchorage over two mountain ranges and 500 miles west to the village of Emmonak. They then took a small four-seater plane to Nunima Iqua. The Elders were dropped off about two miles from the village with their luggage. They were about to set off across the frozen Yukon River to the village in zero degree weather when the letter carrier drove by on a four-wheeler and asked them if they would like a ride. After passing two villagers ice fishing with their dog sleds, and a pack of wolves they were dropped off at the home of Susan and Mike. After teaching Misty the missionary lessons, the missionaries called President Petersen for a baptismal interview. Then the only obstacle then was where to baptize her. The river had been frozen for some time and no churches, pools, water tanks, or bathtubs exist in the village. Undaunted, the missionaries and Mike flipped over the kitchen table and using an old baby crib for the sides, some precut boards and a tarp the missionaries were inspired to bring, they created a baptismal font. The font was held together with five zip ties and four shoelaces from the elders boots. They filled the “font” one bucket at a time. Misty was baptized and confirmed Nov. 15, 2004. |
