Without our two beautiful little girls (Audrey Annette, May '98 & Marian Grace, Aug '01), Valerie and I (married May '97) would likely be lonely existential nihilists, found wandering the hemisphere in a beat-up Winnebago filled with worn Steinbeck novels and a yellow “Protect Wild Utah” sticker on the bumper; or, holed up in a shack in western Montana with a shelf full of worn Steinbeck novels and a Che Guevera poster in the tool shed. We'd make furniture, live off trout and broccoli, and weave our own cloth.
However, as we do have children, our lives are filled with hope, we cling to the gospel like beggars to bread, we work our tails off, and we still find time to rant and rave about Modernism, monoculturism, Republican presidents, environmental apathy and a potpourri of other social ills. Occasionally, we find time to read something by Steinbeck.
(I study organizational behavior at Vanderbilt Univ., Nashville, TN and teach an occasional MBA course in negotiation.) |
