Comments: LeRoy Layton, Chandler, Ariz., patriarch to Tempe University Stake, has been called by the First Presidency to Preside over the California South Mission with headquarters in Anaheim, Calif.
Pres. Layton presided over the Mesa Stake from 1963 to 1971, when he was released and ordained patriarch.
He was born in Thatcher, Arizona on May 24, 1918 to Ray. A. and Rebecca Layton. He attended the University of Arizona, and has been a farmer most of his life.
He married Roberta Nash of Safford, Ariz., in the Arizona Temple on June 26, 1941, and they have four sons and daughters.
He served in the British Mission in 1939 until the missionaries were returned to the United States because of the war, and finished his mission in the Wester States. He has taught in both priesthood and the auxiliaries, and served as a ward clerk, in a bishopric, as bishop, and as a counselor in a stake presidency.
Mrs. Layton was born in Safford on July 19, 1918, a daughter of Robert L. and Vivian Reed Nash.
She was graduated from what is now known as Arizona State University with a degree in education.
She has served in many posts in the auxiliaries, especially in music and drama, and has served on
stake boards of both Primary and Relief Society. She is Relief Society President of the newly organized Temple University Stake at present.
