President and Sister Terry (1969-72)
President Ira A. Terry and his wife Edna C. Terry moved the mission
headquarters from Oakland to Sacramento when the California Oakland mission
was formed. The mission home was located at 4906 South Land Park Drive
in Sacramento. They set up the mission office about a mile away in a shopping
center at 1184 35th Avenue. The office was located between an insurance
company and an ice cream shop. The latter was a favorite of the missionaries.
Sister Terry loved being the mission mom. When the missionaries would write
their weekly letters they addressed them to both President and Sister Terry.
She enjoyed answering many of the letters herself.
President Terry was a retired executive of General Electric when he
was called as mission president. The story that circulated around the mission
was that he invented the electric toothbrush! They lived in the Boston
Massachusetts area before their call. After their release they moved to
Escondido, California, where he served as a stake patriarch. They counted
5712 convert baptisms in the 20 stakes that comprised the mission during
their three years.
