Dear Missionaries,
We enjoy the many wedding announcements and now birth announcements. It is like hearing from the family.
We have been called to be temple workers in the Los Angeles Temple. We start in November. We are hoping we will be able to learn all we will need to know quickly.
In our stake we are visiting each priest quorum to give four lessons to help motivate and prepare these young men to be missionaries. It is a delightful experience and reminds us of the many zone conferences. It is always a joy to teach the gospel.
We enjoyed a trip to England where we toured England, Scotland and Wales with Elder and Sister Davis. We enjoyed the early church history sites, many castles and the green countryside. They are doing well.
Continue to keep us informed. Our e-mail is:
aaaranch1@juno.com We would love to hear from you.
We love each of you and are so pleased when we hear of your progress and faithfulness.l

FAIR, the Foundation for Apologetics Information and Research that most of you know I do some volunteer work for, has changed its address, from www.fair-lds-org to www.fairlds.org
Please update your bookmarks.
Note: "apologetics" is the scholarly discipline of defending the Church's doctrines from an intellectual point of view. It is not missionary work, and does not replace missionary work, but can, on occasion, assist missionary work.
(Hence the URL to the Truth About 'the Godmakers' is now http://www.fairlds.org/pubs/tagm/)

If any of you have investigators who have been exposed to the infamous book (later made into a film), "The Godmakers," one of the vilest anti-Mormon tracts ever published, you'll be glad to know that a copy of Gilbert Scharff's "The Truth About 'the Godmakers'" is now online. Br. Scharffs, a long-serving institute teacher, wrote this book soon after the movie came out (1986), but because it was self-published, the book never got the exposure it deserved.
Br. Scharffs kindly gave FAIR (Foundation for Apologetics Information and Research, a private organization which publishes defences against anti-Mormon material on the Internet) permission to post the book in its entirety so it is now available to anyone at no charge: http://www.fair-lds.org/Pubs/tagm/
I also have a "stripped" version of the book (all the individual pages were cut out for scanning), which I used to scan the book in for FAIR, if anyone wants to look at the print copy.

Hello everyone! At the request of an alumni, I would like to propose a special get together for anyone who wishes to join us at the Edmonton Mission Alumni website. It is proposed that the alumni who are available and interested, log in Sunday night between 6pm and 9pm for an online discussion. This chat session would be designated for every Sunday between 6pm and 9pm MST. ( You don't have to stay the whole time) This way we all know when there's a good chance of meeting other alumni online. All in favor, meet this Sunday, August 25th. This is only an invitation, so if you are not interested, then we won't be expecting you. ;-) Oh, I should add that friends and members are also welcome to join the discussion. You must be logged in before you can join the chat. Any questions, just send me a comment.
Thanks

The June newsletter for the Canada Edmonton Mission is now online. I have changed the format to display a scanned image of the newsletter instead of retyping the entire text into the website. Click on Mission Newsletter to go and view it now.
I've also added a new Chat module to the alumni site. When someone is in chat mode, you will see below the main navigation bar a "Chat in Progress" indicator. Check out our new Chat Room

Under direction of the North America Central area presidency, missionaries in the Canada Edmonton Mission are no longer permitted to use email to communicate with families. This change took effect Monday, January 28, 2002.
This ban is once again in place after it was announced January 12 by President Boyd K. Packer, Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve, that missionaries may communicate with their families by e-mail under certain guidelines:
"Under the direction of Area Presidencies, mission presidents will establish guidelines to include the following: Missionaries may use e-mail only on preparation day. Missionaries may use computers in public facilities such as libraries or appropriate commercial outlets. Companions should always be together while using a computer. They should not impose on Church members who may have computers. Any cost for using e-mail is to be paid by the missionary."
No reason for this latest ban is given by the area presidency.

A total ban on email for full-time missionaries is being lifted. Please see the following link for more details.

Missionaries from the three Calary Stakes, ie. Calgary East, Calgary North and Calgary West met this past weekend with Elder Simmons in a tri-zone missionary conference. It was announced that effective January 1st, 2002, the three Calgary stakes which are currently in the Canada Edmonton Mission will become part of the Canada Calgary Mission. Also, all full-time missionaries from the Canada Edmonton Mission currently serving in one of the reassigned Calgary stakes will also be reassigned to the Canada Calgary Mission.
If your son or daughter is reassigned to the Calgary Mission, please let me know.
This is not an official announcement and is yet to be confirmed by Church headquarters.
Thanks

Elder L. Tom Perry
Quorum of the Twelve
"I have been honored to visit with you returned missionaries over the years. . . . I have also learned from many conversations with you that the adjustment associated with leaving the mission field and returning to the world you left behind is sometimes difficult."
"May I offer just a few suggestions:"
Rekindle the missionary spirit through more frequent, consistent and mighty prayer. A regular study class for the scriptures would help keep the doctrines of the kingdom clear and in mind. Keep alive the practice of regular scripture study. Also, opportunities to teach the gospel and baptize are not exclusive to those who wear the badge of a full-time missionary.
"There has never been a time in the history of mankind when we have been better equipped to teach the gospel to our Father in Heaven's children.
"What we need is a royal army of returned missionaries, re-enlisted into service. I call on you returned missionaries to re-dedicate yourselves, to become re-infused with the desire and spirit of missionary service. I call on you to look the part, to be the part, to act the part of a servant of our Father in Heaven.
"You are a great army of returned missionaries. Go forward with new zeal and determination and through your example, shine the light of the gospel in this troubled world. This is my humble prayer."
Magnify the effectiveness of your member missionary efforts!

Thank you for you encouragement to use the Web Site. We are still not on internet so our contributions have been negligible. Here is some information that may be enjoyable for the missionaries.
The following wedding announcements have been received:
Spencer Michael Jarvis to Sharon Marie Hunt, August 89, 2001 in the Idaho Falls temple.
Adam John Howard to Chelsey Ellen Damarra Day, August 31, 2001 in the Cardston Alberta Temple.
Spencer Scott Spackman to Destiny Chantel McDermott, August 10, 2001 in the Logan Temple.
Jeffrey Scott Packer to Katherine Carter, August 17, 2001 in the Logan Temple.
September 7, 2001 in the Logan Temple.
Benjamin John Reschke to Laura Mary Smart, August 23, 2001 in the Salt Lake Temple.
We expect more announcements to follow. Remember the words of Elder Richard C. Scott. Plan to go home and get married in the temple.. Let the Lord decide when and who. Counsel with the Lord in this important
matter.
We will be attending General Conference this October and will be in the first session on Saturday and the last session on Sunday. If any of you are planning to attend, keep your eyes open, we would love to see you.
We will be planning a mission reunion prior to the April conference.
We are pleased with the announcement of the creation of a fourth stake in Edmonton. It is the Edmonton North Stake and includes the northeast section of Edmonton with outlying branches included the Fort McMurray Ward. President Purnell is the new stake president.
There are many missionaries on the web site. Encourage others to get on if they haven't as yet. This is a great way to communicate plans and news.
Thank you again for your help with the web site.
President and Sister Andrus

I've noticed that some alumni members have added a picture to their alumni profile. I'm willing to help those who don't have access to a scanner or are unable to digitize a picture of yourself. Simply stuff a picture of yourself into an envelope and pop it in the mail. I'll scan the photo and put it online for you. Simply mail your photo to:

Dear Returned Missionaries,
No, we are not trunky, but as the end of our mission approaches, we are reminded that many of you wanted to know when we would be having our homecoming. We will report to our ward in San Luis Obispo, California on July 22, 2001, at 9:00 a.m. Following the sacrament meeting, there will be a lunch served, for the missionaries who are able to make the journey, at the nearby Institute of Religion. We are in the process of moving from our old chapel to a new chapel and we do not know if the new building will be ready. We have, therefore, provided the location, on the map (see pictures section) for both buildings and the Institute building. If you can join us we would love to see you, however, we realize that time and money make the trip prohibitive for most of you. If you are able to attend the homecoming, will you please call 1-805-544-2845 and leave a message and tell us how many will be coming with you? This will help us know how much food to prepare.
We are understanding more fully the mixed feelings you had when you went home. We have grown to love Canada and the good people here. This is where we watched the Lord mold you into fine men and women. This is where we felt spiritual direction daily as we administered the affairs of the mission, studied our scriptures, and counseled with you. This experience has changed us forever and we are grateful for the priviledge of knowing each of you and serving our Father in Heaven.
Please keep your profiles updated and check this site often for news of reunions and such.
We have enjoyed hearing from many of you with just updates or wedding announcements. Whatever the news, we are delighted to hear from you.
Sincerely,
President and Sister Richard Andrus

We have recently added some very exciting new features to the Canada Edmonton Mission Alumni website.
1) You can now "login" to the site. --Once you have logged in, you can then automatically post to any restricted portion of the site.
2) Hide personal contact info and display it only to registered users.
3) You can now specify your gender/title (Elder/Sister)... this will be used in the future to limit the available companions when selecting your companions to display on your alumni profile.
4) You can choose to receive an email notice when a new content item (guestbook, message, news, story, etc) is posted to the site. You can also specify to only receive alumni profiles that are posted within your era
(they chose the same president as you).
5) Companion linking is now bi-directional. If you select a companion to show on your profile, you will automatically show on their profile.
6) You can now see who else is online at the same time as you. This will allow for a planned realtime chat.
7) You can invite someone to join the site through a standard form "Invite a Friend" you can fill out.
Be sure to update your profile and select the email notices you wish to receive as well as your title/gender (Male/Elder by default... sorry sisters, percentages prevailed).
If you have any questions about the new features, please be sure to let me know.
