Mission Presidents Message - Jan/Feb 2002

2002 brings not only a new year to this great Canada Edmonton Mission, but new boundaries and new challenges and goals. We are fewer in number and we will indeed miss our friends and companions, but we know that these relationships can be eternal ones if we strive to make them so. Remember the sons of Mosiah meeting with Alma after at least 14 years of missionary service. “They were still (Alma’s) Brethren in the Lord: yea and they had waxed strong in the knowledge of the truth, for they were men of a sound understanding and they had searched the scriptures diligently that they might know the word of God. But this is not all, they had given themselves to much prayer and fasting therefore they had the spirit of prophesy and the spirit of revelation and when they taught, they taught with power and authority of God.” Alma 17:2-3

These same principals can help us build ourselves and thus build the kingdom here today! These great men were strong in the knowledge of the truth! How are your testimonies? Have you “searched the scriptures diligently” to know and understand to the word of God for not only you personally, but for your companion and also those you teach? Have you given yourself to “much prayer and fasting” both for day to day help and in setting your goals for this new year? Are you mighty men and women of God? Along with those principals come obedience and repentance. Again remember the promise in Alma 26:22: “Yea, he that repenteth and excersizeth faith, and bringeth forth good works, and prayeth continually withought ceasing - unto such it is given to know the mysteries of God:.......yea and it shall be given unto such to bring thousands of souls unto repentance...

We are not asking that you should bring thousands of souls to repentance (that would be wonderful) but we do remind you of our mission goal for the year. One new convert per companionship ever 2 months. (6 new converts per year per companionship) A minimum of 300 children of our Heavenly Father - our brothers and sisters - coming to Christ through your faith, prayers, and good works. We know that this can be achieved! We know that you can succeed! As the Lord comforted Ammon, “bear with patience thine afflictions and I will give unto you success.”

Together with the Lord”s help we will indeed “grow the gospel” here in the new boundaries of the Canada Edmonton Mission.

This is the beginning of the next generation of The Canada Edmonton Mission. As the new year begins, we have the opportunity to rededicate ourselves and to take our mission to the next level. I have really enjoyed my time as a missionary and being able to serve around you all. I want to bear you my witness that I know this is the gospel of Jesus Christ. I wish you success in all your endeavors and remember, "If you could hie to Kolob..."

-Much love, Elder Ryan Sorensen

Dear Elders and sisters,
We are very excited to bring your the first addition of "Raise the roof"! We are pumped about what is happening in the mission. Teaching pools are going up and we look forward to seeing these investigators enjoying the blessings of the gospel as they are baptized and apply the gospel in their lives. "I know that which the Lord has commanded me, and I glory in it. I do not glory of myself, but I glory in that which the Lord has commanded me; yea, and this is my glory, that perhaps I may be an instrument in the hands of God to bring some soul unto repentance; and this is my joy." (Alma 29:9) "But I do not joy in my success alone, but my joy is more full because of the success of my Brethren..."(Alma 29:14). We love you all and our prayer are with you. Let's all go ouit and Raise the Roof!!

Love, Elder Casey Johnson

Other Mission News

Under direction of the North America Central area presidency, missionaries in the Canada Edmonton Mission are no longer permitted to use email to communicate with families. This change took effect Monday, January 28, 2002.

This ban is once again in place after it was announced January 12 by President Boyd K. Packer, Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve, that missionaries may communicate with their families by e-mail under certain guidelines:

"Under the direction of Area Presidencies, mission presidents will establish guidelines to include the following: Missionaries may use e-mail only on preparation day. Missionaries may use computers in public facilities such as libraries or appropriate commercial outlets. Companions should always be together while using a computer. They should not impose on Church members who may have computers. Any cost for using e-mail is to be paid by the missionary."

No reason for this latest ban is given by the area presidency.
