Stories: The Power of One

I served in Welland, Ontario from Aug. 1999 to Feb. 2000 and had many wonderful experiences there. One day Elder Bendel and I received a media referral from a young sister whose husband was not a member. Through the encouragement of her grandmother who lived in British Columbia, she decided to return to Church activity. On this particular day she ordered a Book of Mormon for her husband and requested that we share the discussions with their family. A few months later her husband was baptized, and subsequently he in turn baptized their oldest son. It was a joy to see the miracles that took place with that family. And those marvelous miracles took place in large measure because of one individual---a sensitive and thoughtful grandmother---who was willing to listen to the whisperings of the Spirit and who reached out over 2,000 miles across a continent to share her strong testimony and influence with her then less-active granddaughter. Although I never had the privilege of meeting her, this stalwart grandmother's example reminded me of something I once learned in a priesthood meeting: "I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everthing, but I can still do something. And because I can do something, I will not hesitate to do that which I can do." Never underestimate the power of one! |
