Our beloved husband, son, brother and uncle died unexpectedly on April 18,
2013 in Scottsdale, Arizona. Matt was born in Provo, Utah on June 9, 1976, the tenth child of Joyce Hawkes and Robert William Metcalf. He was a sweet child and blessing in their home.
With the help and prodding of his mother, Matt earned his Eagle Scout award at age 13 and joined his five big brothers in the Eagles' nest.
Matt's father died when he was 14 and Matt missed him immensely. He developed a special bond with his mother and appreciated her unconditional love and support.
Matt graduated from Cottonwood High School. He played soccer for Utah Valley Community College and attended the University of Utah, where he met a beautiful cheerleader, the love of his life, Anna Kathleen Smith. Matt and Kathy both served L.D.S. missions at the same time, Matt in Vancouver, Canada and Kathy in Hong Kong, China. A month after he returned home, they married on December 19, 1998. Matt adored Kathy! They settled in Scottsdale, Arizona where they have lived for the last 12 years.
Matt worked in the commercial construction business, building fast food restaurants, Checker Auto Parts and Mattress Firms in 10 western states. He was the president of Dayt Construction, Southwest Division. He was highly respected by his loyal customers and employees; he had exceptional charisma and drive.
Matt was happiest spending time with friends at football games (Go UTES) and the lake. He excelled at snow skiing, golfing, soccer and wake boarding. He was determined to land a back roll every year, which he did!
He was loyal, loving and kept us laughing at all times. He was the best example of living life in the moment and helping others to do the same!
Matt will be deeply missed by many good friends and by the big Metcalf and Smith families. Matt and Kathy loved and spoiled their 47 nieces and nephews who each cherish fun memories with their favorite Uncle Matt!
Matt was preceded in death by his father and sister Angela. He is survived by his loving wife Kathy, his mother, his siblings R. Bradley (Jan), David (Karalee), Shauna (Brent) Watts, Richard (Cindy), Jonathan (Dawn), Michael (Jane), Susan (Jim) Hammons, and Katherine (Justin) Parker as well as Kathy's family, her father Steven R. Smith, Brandon (Tonia) Smith, Stefanie (Gabe) Birrer, Dana Smith, Brianne (Nate) Hovey, and Steven B.
