Stories: Teaching with Boldness

At some point about halfway through my mission (probably 1994) we had a conference with the current area authority, Elder Mickelson. During the conference he taught us that we should teach with boldness.
After the conference my companions and I became more bold in our door approaches when we went tracting, and when giving charlas. For example, we would knock on a door and when it was answered we'd say something like "We represent Jesus Christ and we're here to talk to you about baptism". Most of the time the person at the door would wave their finger at us and say "Soy Catolico", or "ya estoy bautisado Catolico". This was a great opportunity for us to get right to the point and talk about baptism by imersion and give a first discussion in many cases. Once we began to be more bold as missionaries success rate increased quite a bit as a companionship.
Interestingly, shortly after I returned home to the Tacoma Washington area I went on splits with the missionaries and tried a similar door approach one day when we were tracting. I told the guy at a door that we represented Jesus Christ and were there to baptise him. He almost punched me in the face before slamming the door on us. I think that goes to show the difference in teachability between Chileans and Americans. |
