We didn't have a mission nurse at the time, and I was told to drink 'Cola de Caballo'. So, I boiled weeds every day for a few months and the pain went away. I didn't know this at the time, but Guitig, that nasty seltzer water, and coca-cola gave me kidney stones(no joke). In May 1996, one of those stones cut my kidney and it stopped working. By then, we had a mission nurse and she told me to have an x-ray. That's when I found out I had a kidney stone lodged in my kidney. It was too large to pass normally and the doctors in SLC wouldn't allow the surgery to take place in Quito, so I was flown home. I had the surgery in Las Vegas and everything went well.
