All of the mission experiences were just great. I remember walking past 18th street my first night in my first area, getting bichos, teaching in my first cane houses, the Hotel Guay and Squash (haven't played before or since), working on the office cars with Overman, transacting banking business as a preferred customer at the bank as financial secretary and driving to Machala to audit the branches there, a trip to the mudpit baths and Salinas, the bus to Babaoyo after a big meal, cancelled flights to Loja and the resultant 14 hour bus trip, Pedro Carbo and bucket bathing (and leaving there for the tennis club at Los Ceibos--talk about contrast), the transfer from Pedro to what was then the nicest pension in Alborada and the train ride on the roof to Bucay, and finishing up with the great people of |
