Scouting Anniversary
The year 1998 marked the 30th anniversary of the
38th Bristol (LDS) Scout Group, probably the oldest continuous Scout group within the
Church in the United Kingdom. To celebrate the anniversay, the Scouts held a camp at
Gilwell Park, the Scout movement's national camp site near London, from 15-22 August 1998.
The Bristol Group were joined by the 10th Bolton, 4th Harlow, and 10th Squirrel Heath
Groups, which are also LDS units.
The camp provided a wide-ranging programme that
included archery and rifle shooting, canoeing, grass sledging, amateur radio broadcasting,
swimming, and playing games. The boys also spent one day hiking in Epping Forest and
another day touring London, which included a visit to 10 Downing Street and other popular
places such as the Baden-Powell House and the Hyde Park Chapel.
A team from the 38th Bristoll won the camp knockout
football competition and participated in many of the water sports, including a ride on the
popular banana boat, which was pulled by a speedboat.
On Sunday the Scouts held a fireside service about
the temple, and later in the week they built a temple-like stucture out of logs and rope.
The camp was a sucess both spiritually and
physically, and the Gilwell Park staff gave the Scouts their best camp report to date. - Keith
