Comments:
I returned from München and went back to school at BYU, including taking German from President Kelling. Eventually, I finished my Ph.D. in Chemistry from the Y and went to work in 1984 for a big Swiss chemical company, CIBA-GEIGY, headquartered in Basle, Switzerland. I worked in Greensboro, NC, (the US headquarters) but got a chance to spend 6 months in Basle on a research assignment. Ciba merged with another Swiss company, Sandoz, in 1997 forming Novartis. I've been with CIBA-GEIGY -- Ciba -- Novartis my whole career. We were in NC for nearly 16 years and I'm currently with CIBA Vision in Duluth, GA (just outside Atlanta). Working for a Swiss company does give me some good opportunity to keep up my german.
I married Mary Lee Nielson in 1979 and we have 5 children - 3 boys and 2 girls. The girls are both married now and we have one grandson with a granddaughter on her way (as of August 2010).
My oldest, Bryan, served his mission in the Baltics, mostly in Latvia and my next oldest, Sunny, a daughter, served a mission in Taiwan. Scott, our #4, is currently serving in the Madrid, Spain mission.
My church "career" has been mostly with the youth. I spent nearly 11 years in bishoprics (as counselors and bishop) and have several stints in YM presidencies, both ward and stake. I even got to be scoutmaster for a couple of years. I did make some side-jaunts with a couple of short-lived terms on the High Council as well as the Stake Mission Presidency and two different stints teaching seminary. Currently teaching the Gospel Essentials class.
