News Item: Garments for Members in Polochic

Not long after I returned from my mission I had the opportunity to help a new member family in La Tinta with their expenses of attending the temple for the first time. It wasn't much of a sacrifice for me but was a huge blessing for the family as well as for me. I have always wanted to have that opportunity again but never really knew how to accomplish it. This past Christmas my bishop encouraged us to do something to make a difference for someone. I decided that I would find a way to help the members in Polochic to be able to purchase garments and then help offset the expense of attending the temple.
Through emails with President Ramos, he put me in contact with Arturo Rodriguez Salazar in Guatemala. Arturo served his mission in Polochic from 1988-1989 and then later served as a counselor in the Guatemala City North Mission from 1997-2003. He has a great love for the K'ekchi people as I'm sure many of you do. Arturo has done a lot of research on the Guatemala side to find out the need as well as the details of how to help. Between the districts of Senahu, Sacsuha, and Chulac there are 561 endowed members. The cost of a pair of garments is Q33.00 or about $4.40. We found that the garments can be purchased here in the USA at LDS Distribution and they would send them to Guatemala where Arturo would be able to receive them and distribute them.
Our hope is that we can purchase one pair for each member and then create a fund that will be available for future garment purchases as well as offset the travel expense of attending the temple.
I have set up an account at Zions Bank for the Polochic Fund. If any of you would like to contribute you can send the money to me, or if you would like to deposit money directly into the account you can contact me for the information.
Many of you know that the members in Polochic usually own just one pair of garments for their entire life. And to be able to attend the temple and to buy garments requires huge sacrifice for them. The Lord has blessed me temporally as I'm sure He has each of you. I think this is a wonderful way to show our gratitude by helping the great faithful members in Polochic make and keep their temple covenants.
