Curtis Laverl Giles, 63, Haiti Port-au-Prince Mission; Deer Creek Ward, Midway Utah Stake; former counsellor in stake presidency, high councillor, ward mission leader, ward Young Men president, bishop, and missionary. President Wasco Credit Union. Born in Heber City, Utah, to Forrest Grant and Viola Sweat Giles.
Married Ilene Michie, six children. A counsellor in Young Women presidency, she is a former Primary teacher, Relief Society president, Young Women adviser, stake Young Women president, and ward Young Women president. Assistant manager of campus scheduling at BYU. Born in Midway, Utah, to George Kenneth and Yoma Esther Nelson Michie.
Curtis LaVerl Giles died on September 30, 2014 while serving his fourth mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the England London Mission with his dear wife, Ilene Michie Giles.
Curt was born in Center Creek, Utah to Forrest Grant and Viola Sweat Giles on May 6, 1940. Curt attended Wasatch High School until 1958, after which he worked for the National Forest Service for 3 summers. In 1960, Curt left to serve for 2 ½ years in the French East Mission which included Switzerland and France.
When Curt returned from his mission he married his high school sweetheart, Ilene, on July 26, 1963 in the Salt Lake Temple. Curt received a B.A. degree in Education and French from BYU in 1965. He continued education there and completed his Masters Degree in Business Administration in 1967.
From 1967 to 1993, Curt's career led him to Chicago and St. Louis where he worked in banking and finance for Continental National Bank, County National Bank Corporation, and Morgan Systems, Inc. In May of 1993, Curt moved with his family to Midway, Utah where he was manager of WASCO Credit Union for 10 years, and then from 2006 to 2010 was controller of Local Book Publishing.
Throughout his life, Curt served faithfully in many church callings. On Christmas Day 1977, Curt was set apart as bishop of the St. Louis 3rd Ward. Later he also served in the St. Louis Stake Presidency. After relocating to Midway in 1993, Curt continued fulfilling other church callings, including serving as a counselor in the Midway Stake Presidency.
In March of 2003, Curt was called as Mission President, along with Ilene, over the Haiti Port-au-Prince Mission. Experiences among the humble and wonderful people of Haiti, and the dedicated missionaries they served with, blessed their lives immeasurably. After completing their mission in Haiti, Curt served as an assistant in the Heber Valley Camp Leadership, as a temple worker in the Provo Temple, and as a volunteer in the Provo Missionary Training Center. From September of 2010 until April 2012, Curt and Ilene served in the Canada Montreal Mission. During this time, blessings were received by service in the French-speaking Hochelaga Ward, in the mission office, among the missionaries, and in the Montreal Quebec Temple.
In 2013, Curt and Ilene planned and celebrated an amazing 50th wedding anniversary with their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. It was a "forever family" memory never to be forgotten.
Curt loved people and constantly sought ways to serve those around him wherever he went. He loved walking, gardening, woodworking, fishing, spending time outdoors, and teasing his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was married for 51 beautiful years to the love of his life.
Curt is survived by his wife and six children; Lisa (Terry) Harward, Janine (Darryl) Hardy, Carla (Bryan) Willets, Brad (Siska) Giles, Greg (Melissa) Giles, and David (Sara) Giles. He is preceded in death by his parents and sister Enid, and survived by his other siblings Melva, Paul, Fay, Gaylen, and Marty. He is also survived by 22 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
A viewing will be held both Wednesday, October 8th, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, and Thursday, October 9th, from 9:30am to 10:30am at the Midway LDS Stake Center (165 N. Center Street, Midway). Funeral services will be held following the Thursday viewing at 11:00am. Interment at the Midway City Cemetery. |
