Stories: Speedway Volunteers

On Memorial Day 1969 we had 40 missionaries don pith helmets and yellow security shirts to do crowd control at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. At the time I was the training zone leader which was a mini- MTC for new Elders sent to the then Great Lakes Mission. We paired 20 of the best senior companions in the mission with 20 new Elders that just arrived by
train in Fort Wayne. The training zone existed just for 30 days so that the new Elders could get a fast start on memorizing the discussions and how to tract with success. The local Speedway ward members did a ward budget fund raiser every year by volunteering at the track. This year we the Elders were thrilled to be at the scene of excitement. I was stationed at turn #2 and had my back to the fence and could feel the roar and vibrations of the cars passing at near 200 mph. Fortunately, no one hit the wall and sprayed me with auto parts. The missionaries were grateful to serve at such an exciting place. |
