News Item: Missionary Evacuation Notice (18 Apr 2002)
Displaying 1 - 1 of 1 -- Add News
Dear Brethren,
Please be informed that today 54 full-time missionaries were evacuated from Madagascar with the assistance of the American Embassy in Antananarivo. Some of those evacuated have been released from their missions, while others are reassigned to State-side missions for the duration of their service. Thirty-six missionaries (those with the longest time yet to serve) will be redeployed within the three missions in South Africa. When the political situation is resolved and peace and tranquility prevail once again, it is expected that these 36 missionaries would be the nucleus around which the mission would be reestablished in Madagascar.
While the chartered evacuation flight was moving down the runway early this afternoon, four other missionaries were boarding the flight to La Reunion. On Tuesday next week, the last Elder here will travel to Mauritius and the last Sister to La Reunion. Sister Hill and I, as well as the Findlays and the Flanagans, will remain here in Madagascar. The aftermath of an evacuation is daunting---apartments, leases, furniture, etc. In addition to managing the affairs of the mission, we will help the stake leaders pick up more of the responsibility for missionary work, and put into place a welfare/commodities distribution system for the growing number of members adversely affected by the crisis.
For all practical purposes, the mission now consists of La Reunion and Mauritius. Elder Braden Grant Hancock, Zone Leader in La Reunion, has been given an additional role as the Assistant to the President. It is envisaged that he will visit Mauritius from time to time to help. I would be grateful if you would work closely with him as we intensify our efforts on the islands.
Thank you, Brethren, for your love and support. You have been a source of strength in this difficult time for the mission.
I'm grateful to you for your diligent efforts in carrying the work forward.
President Hill

LDS QUOTE: |
"Wouldnt this be a good time for a little self-evaluation to determine if we still have the same relationship with our Father in Heaven that we enjoyed in the mission field? If the world has diverted us from the practice of prayer, we then have lost a great spiritual power. Maybe it is time that we rekindle our missionary spirit through more frequent, consistent, and mighty prayer."
