Keenan, as his family and friends know him, arrived in Mexico on May 21st 2012. As you know, most missionaries who leave the MTC don't speak much 'normal' Spanish and Keenan was no exception. He has started his mission with a Chilean companion who speaks no English at all. Keenan is going through the culture shock of seeing/hearing people sell water from their trucks as they go down the street advertising all day from large speakers mounted to their trucks. Not to mention the garbage 'service'. He thought that was particularly interesting because the garbage trucks run by broadcasting "La basura!" all day and the guys on their donkeys who pick up trash are there too. His Chilean companion, who speaks no English, speaks Spanish very quickly, and he leaves out parts of words now and then as Chileans are known to do now and then. I know Keenan will pick up the language eventually and he has an EXCELLENT attitude about everything, but I wonder how many missionaries start their missions with a training companion who only speaks Spanish and who has only been out for six months himself. If anyone can handle it, Keenan can. He won't give up and I'm sure it is teaching him a great lesson in faith. We at home find it interesting, and we are crossing our fingers for him every day. :) |
