Rich, along with his companion Mike Capener, were the first two missionaries I met when I transferred into Mexico City for the first time after starting my mission in Cuernavaca. I have a picture of him standing in front of a Coke truck with his hair combed over his ears as he was on his way to the barber.

Richard Joseph Smith 1953 ~ 2007 BOUNTIFUL - Richard Joseph Smith, 53, beloved husband, father and grandfather, returned to his Father in Heaven Sunday, March 25, 2007, after a valiant battle with brain cancer, at home surrounded by his loving family. Rich was born April 26, 1953 in Pensacola, Florida to Dr. Jerrold Cydney Smith and Ruth Lindberg Smith. He is the oldest of eight children. Rich spent most of his childhood in Monticello, Utah graduating from Monticello High School where he was active in sports and music. He served an LDS mission to Mexico City, Mexico. He returned home and married the love of his life, Kristy Peck on Aug. 16, 1975 in the Oakland California Temple. To this union were born three children. Rich received his bachelor's degree and his master's degree in Health Care Administration from BYU. His 30 year healthcare career was spent with Intermountain Healthcare, an organization that he loved dearly with many dear colleagues and friends. He has been a leader in the health care industry. In 1990 he received the Intermountain Health Care Manager of Distinction Award; 2001 the distinguished Health Care Executive of the Year Award from the Utah Hospital Association; January of 2007 the Healthcare Executive Regents Award. He was currently serving on the Utah Hospital Association Executive Board. He served as the Regent for the American College of Healthcare Executives for Utah and Nevada 1991 to 1995. In 2001 he served as President of the Cache Chamber of Commerce in Logan, UT. Rich was a faithful and devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He radiated the Savior's love as he served as a Bishop of the Mt. Ogden Ward and the USU 61st Ward, as a gospel doctrine teacher, a High Councilor and a Stake Mission President. His testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ was often expressed through music. Rich lived life to the fullest. His motto was, "Service above Self." He administered compassion and concern for all whom he came in contact with. His testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ guided his activities and services in all facets of his life. He is survived by his wife Kristy, children Heather S. Teeples (Brandon), Columbus, OH; R. Matthew Smith (Michelle) Castle Rock, CO; Christopher J. Smith, student at Utah State University, Logan, UT. His greatest joy was his three grandchildren, Isaac Teeples, Daphne and Cole Richard Smith. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters, David Smith (Shannon), Jeralyn Lovell (Dirk), Annette Harmon (Joseph), Sherryl Richardson (Brud), Barbara Redd (Charles), S. Jonathan Smith (Margie), and Cydney Greenhalgh (Vern); step-mother Janice Smith and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Preceded in death by his mother and father and his father-in-law Dean O. Peck. A celebration of Rich's life will be held Friday, March 30, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at the Val Verda Stake Center, 2600 S. 500 W. Bountiful, Utah. Friends may call Thurs., March 29th from 6-9 p.m. at Lindquist's Bountiful Mortuary, 727 N. 400 E. and 9:45 - 10:45 a.m. at the church prior to services. Interment Ben Lomond Cemetery, North Ogden, UT. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made in memory of Richard J. Smith to the Deseret Foundation at LDS Hospital P.O.
