Stories: Scared of Dogs

I was one of the fortunate few to have served with Elder Ryan Weishaar in the MSLM. We were serving in the Columbia Stake together in California, MO, just West of Jefferson City. As any of you who may have served with Elder Weishaar may know, Elder Weishaar is a wonderful tract-er and he loves to walk everywhere.
On one such occasion, we were met by a random neighborhood rottweiler, roaming the streets of California. He still had a long leash following him around that had once held him in his owner's yard.
I have grown up with animals most of my life and had a basic sense of the territorial character of dogs. I sensed that we were in no danger of getting into any sort of dog fight with this well-bred K-9 because he could not claim it as his territory. As this was going through my head, the dog gave us a quiet "woof" and slightly lunged at us. I knew from watching "When Animals Attack," on The Discovery Channel, to stand my ground and hold still. This could be what scientists call a mock charge. Grizzly bears often do this just to give you a little scare. So, I stood there to see what would happen next, waiting to see how this little scare would affect me. I then heard Elder Weishaar screaming at me to, "get up here!" As I turned around dumbfounded about where "up" was, I saw Elder Weishaar standing on the hood of a randomly parked Ford LTD, waving his arms and doing what appeared to be a clog. Apparently, he hadn't watched the nature specials I had watched to understand that all animals are like the mother grizzly.
Every time I think of Elder Weishaar, I think of him dancing on top of that old sedan. I also believe I heard a quiet laugh coming from the dogs direction... Nah!
But, if any of you readers are preparing to go on missions, just remember that you can never watch too many documentaries on grizzlies... |
