West Central States Mission
First Area Rock Springs, Wyoming
Missionary Journal: March 31, 1964
Just got my assignment to labor in Rock Springs, Wyoming with Elder Thomas Tingey as my senior trainer companion. I'm to take off to night from Billings, Montana at 6:30pm and fly back down to Wyoming. It looks like airsickness again.
I arrive on the ground at 9:36pm and as I enter the terminal there he was: tall, in a dark suit, legs crossed and his body leaning against the wall, arms folded and a toothpick in his month. He asked with a sound of authority, "Are you Elder Terry?" I answer affirmative to his question. I'm now carrying my two suitcases in each hand, a picture pack under one arm, my scriptures under the other and trying to find where to place the 4x3 rolled-up flannel board. I was in hope that he would help me carry some of this but just said to follow him to the car. Only place left was to carry the flannel board with my teeth.
It was in the morning that I discover why they transferred me into Rock Springs at night. There were no trees in the city! The wind seems to blow all the time. The stresses were layout by sheep trails. A total of three stop signs in the town of 10,000 and 26 bars. Lots of rocks. Never did find the spring. Here I'm to labor and serve the Lord. |
