Dear Elaine:
Thank you for your e-mail explaining fully the story of your Aunt Meriyo. I am comforted to learn that she actually had a large, caring family and can certainly understand your being upset by what I mistakenly reported.
Please know that I had no idea that the information regarding your Aunt was incorrect and I do apologize for the errors noted. Please allow me to explain what happened.
Being on the committee to reach out to former missionaries, I volunteered to call. When I talked with her I was reminded again of her sweet spirit. I had remembered her to be a very committed and diligent missionary. She said that she had forgotten much with the passing of the years and didn't remember me or one of her companions I mentioned, but she sounded happy and thanked me several times for calling.
I spoke with Alma, her caretaker at Elim Rest Home. She obviously loved and admired Meriyo for she spoke very highly of her. I believe it was she who helped contact us in behalf of your Aunt because she wanted Meriyo to have phone calls and visitors. Apparently, she was not at that time aware of Meriyo's having family visitors (perhaps they visited when Alma wasn't working?) and everything I reported to our webmaster was based only on what Norma told me. None of us on the NFEM committee knew anything of Meriyo's family and had hit a wall as far as getting more information about her.
I apologize that the information I reported was missing much of the detail which only you could provide; thank you for the clarification. I apologize for the embarrassment and heartache this has caused you and your family and will ask that our webmaster send this letter out to everyone as well, so that there will be no question as to the devotion you and your family undoubtedly have had for your beloved Aunt. May God bless you and your family for your kindness to Meriyo.
Sincerely,
Shirley Tong

"Obedience is the price, faith is the power, love is the motive, the Spirit is the key, and Christ is the reason." The motto of the Japan Fukuoka Mission can be applied not only to missionary work, but to everyday life. -BYU President Bateman
