George K. AWA'S Memories 02 Feb 2009
Aloha! Brother Wayne Summers..... Thank you for this interesting email. I don't know of any bad missionaries. If they were bad, they would have been sent home. I was not interviewed by President Kimball. The companion I admired the most was Elder Miller. He knew Japanese well. Both reading, speaking and writing. And, even writing in Kanji. He was amazing. I served under President Robertson and President Paul Andrus. Paul Andrus married my wife's cousin, Frances Parker. Also, my wife's sister, Philomena Andrade, married John Clawson. The two cousins served together under President Clissold. Paul and John first served in Hawaii. Both of them were transferred to Japan under President Clissold. This is just a side note. Nothing to do with your question. I had three or four companions in the three years I was in Japan. It is not like today. Missionaries are transferred constantly today. During our time in Japan, we hardly transferred missionaries. I only had one local companion from Hawaii. It was different during our time. We helped one another on the mission field. I felt the Spirit stronger at that time. The mission is where my testimony grew. Thank you for asking. This may not be what you want. George K. AWA (NFEM '54-'57-Japan)/Vicki Awa P.S. Just a side note. My wife and I have been called to serve in the Kona Temple, Hawaii as Temple Ordinance Workers. We are in the Kona First Ward. This is the Big Island of Hawaii. It is good to be back working in the Temple again after our two years mission in Nigeria and researching my wife's Dad's side of geneology/family history in Madeira Island, Portugal. We lived on Madeira Island for a year. The Hawaii Temple on the Island of Oahu will be closed for 18 months. Big plans for the Hawaii Temple. There are 13 Stakes on the Island of Oahu. The islands will work out a schedule to attend the Kona Temple. It is a small Temple. It will be a miracle. Just think: LIFE IS A MISSION AND NOT A CARERR. We appreciate your emails. Thank you again.

"Obedience is the price, faith is the power, love is the motive, the Spirit is the key, and Christ is the reason." The motto of the Japan Fukuoka Mission can be applied not only to missionary work, but to everyday life. -BYU President Bateman
