Dear Wayne,
Introducing Bro. Arthur Nishimoto. He is recovering from walking pneumonia right now (4-2009). He has been everything but a general authority - Colonel in US Army, present when Pearl Harbor occurred, went on top of his garage and watched the Zeros dive down and release their torpedoes, joined the 442nd Regiment of nisei who went to Europe and became the most decorated units in WWII, worked himself up from private to Colonel in counter intelligence, bishop, high councilor, mission president of Fukuoka Mission in 1973-1976 after retiring from the Army, then asked by the PBO to stay in Japan and help set up the PBO/Area Presidency Office in Tokyo, purchased the PBO building, negotiated with local residents surrounding the Tokyo Temple to get them to cooperate in getting it built and dedicated and accepted by the neighbors, Regional Rep, organized a mission in Siberia, after 8 years in Japan, came to SLC, asked to set up area presidency offices in some of the Western States, also helped find land and see that chapels were built here in Nevada, moved to Vegas at recommendation of Roy Tsuya, a cohort who also was in the 442nd and served as mission president of Fukuoka Mission, was made stake patriarch on the west side of Vegas Valley, was ordained a temple sealer here in Vegas by his friend James E. Faust. He knew and traveled with Pres. Hinckley when he visited the Orient. He is still sharp and will tell you like it is.
His phone is 702-228-6498. He uses hearing aids but usually takes them out when he talks on the phone. Just be aware you may have to talk loud if he does not understand the first time. Two of his sons served in the NFE (Spencer & Castle). Two more sons also served in Japan. A great guy to get to know while he's still here. He and his wife are 85 and will be 86 in August. Please tell him I referred you to him for the full scoop on the present conditions of Pres. & Sis. Komatsu and kids. He knows them all well. Sincerely, your kyodai, George M. McCune |
