An interesting blog concerning the current mission president of the Oregon Portland Mission. Here's a snippet:
"We have come to think of baptism as a rite that initiates a person for membership into our Church. It is no such thing. Gaining membership in the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is ancillary to baptism at best, but the ordinance of baptism has little to do with "joining the church" as we often erroneously conflate the two. Baptism serves a separate purpose from joining the community of believers."
