While serving my mission back in 1989 under Oscar Aguayo, I found out that my sister Analisa had leukemia. In order for her to survive she would need a bone marrow transplant. One of my brothers or I would have to match 6 out 6 elements in the blood. My two other brother's only matched 3 out 6. I was her only chance, otherwise she would have to go to an outside donor which would make it more difficult in her recovery. I had to send my blood through Elder Christianson who was form Long Beach, Ca within 24 hours or my blood would be no good. My parents awaited the missionary and the blood and delivered the precious blood to UCLA. While we were waiting the results, my mission, my home ward was fasting and praying that I would have the same blood. 3 days later I was informed by my Mission President that I had matched and that I would be going home two months later to give my sister a bone marrow transpant. It was a miracle. However, I knew before the results that I had the same blood as my sister because I had a spiritual experience. As my blood was being extracted from my arm I felt the spirit indicate to me that I had the same blood as my sister. That night before Elder Christianson was to arrive in Los Angeles to deliver the blood to my parents my Dad called me at the Hotel. I remember him asking me, "Alfred, do you think you have the same blood as your Sister". I felt the spirit again, and said, "Dad, Don't worry, tell Analisa that I have the same blood and everything will be alright. Sure enough I was right. While serving my last two months in Peru, I was asking myself, Why is this happening to me? Why to I have to have this challenge especially when I'm getting the language down and really starting to feel comfortable here. One night while I was writing in my journal I felt the spirit strongly and I wrote, I'm going to help my sister, she's going to be alright, I'm going to baptize my parents, and finish my mission somewhere in Texas. Sure enough, one week before I came home from Peru, I called my sister to make sure everthing was on schedule with the bone Marrow transplant and she said, Alfred. Guess what!! Guess what!! I said what!! what!! Mom and Dad are going to get baptized this Sunday and you are going to baptize them. I was estatic and told her I knew this was going to happen, I knew this was going to happen because the spirit had told me. Anyways, to make a long story short, I came home and baptized my parents, gave my sister a bone marrow transplant, and finished my mission in Corpus Christi, Texas. My sister has been in remission for over 11 years now and is living a normal life. I'll never forget this experiece I had and know that Heavenly Father does answer prayers and my faith has grown tremendously. Anytime I have problems or going through tough time I look back at this experience as an anchor. You can read my article in the February ensign of 1994 under "MISSIONARY MARROW". It has pictures of my family. |
