Why is it that I've been home from the Philippines for nearly 4 years, and yet still I do that thing where I open my mouth real wide when I didn't hear what someone said, or I do the awkwardly shy "excuse me" hand gesture whenever i walk between two conversing people.
And how come every time Jeremy Peterson and I would eat lunch at the Wilk at BYU, we'd always just get a plain white rice bowl and smother it with soy sauce?
And am I crazy for longing for the nostalgic chill of an Aircon Ceres Tours every time I ride the UTA bus around Provo?
And finally, how is it that I can still play AND sing "Pagdating ng Panahon" and "Basang Basa sa Ulan" on guitar?
It's because although I've forgetten many things about the Filipino language, and have lost touch with people that have changed my life, those people and their culture have affected me, if even subtly, and I will always be a better person for it. |
