Elder McCook has been in the field for about 6 months and has had some wonderful experiences. He has a great love for the Filipino people. He is in a unique position now as he is serving on the small island between Negros Occidental and Iloilo. This island has only been open for missionary work since Aug 2007. It looks like there are only about 10 missionaries including a senior couple who are serving on Guimaras. The members and missionaries are divided into "groups" and sometimes a missionary might even be called as a group leader. The saints there are particularly strong as they are so few in number and are breaking away from the traditions of their fathers. Just a few weeks ago when Typhoon Frank hit, the members and investigators made it to church during the end of the typhoon as the Stake Pres gave the ok for services. Elder McCook relays that he was amazed that they perserved through the storm and even a family came whose home had been blown away hours earlier. He sees poverty and many challenges but sees a great faithfulness in the people. It is such a blessing for our family and friends to hear of the many experiences our son is a part of. He is our first missionary. |
