Nanay Concordia: Dingras Ilocos Norte 26 Nov 2007
It was a humid overcast day in Dingras, Ilocos Norte when Elder Evans and I stumbled unto Nanay Concordia. We had been going house to house on her street and we had been rejected many times before we came to her house. When we knocked on her open door she was the only one sitting in her living room. The rest of her family ran and hid in the back of the house when they saw us coming. She was crippled by a stroke, and we later learned that this was the only reason she did not join the rest of her family in the back room that first day. She relunctantly began listening to our lessons. She heard it 2 times over before she began praying about it and came to learn of its truth. After her baptism she became a diligent scholar of the Book of Mormon. She would read it everyday and she loved to talk about the stories and things she read. Her niece, Sister Baniaga, would cart her crippled body to the meeting house every Sunday, and this she did diligently until one Sunday we realized Nanay Concordia was not in church. We asked Sister Baniaga what had happened and she said she forgot to pick her up. We knew how much Nanay Concordia loved church so we were worried how she might be dealing with this, so we went to visit her imediately after our meetings. We found her sitting in her chair she had always sat in when we shared our lessons with her. She was dressed in her Sunday best and had her Book of Mormon clasped between her fingers. She did not respond to anything we said, instead she sat quietly staring down at her hands. "What is the matter?" My Companion asked in Tagalog. A tear trickled down her cheek as she replied, "Elders I wish I could walk again...so that I would have to rely on someone else to take me to church every Sunday." Our hearts went out to her imediately. I looked at my senior companion hoping that he had some solution to comfort her. My companion looked at me then without hesitation he turned to Nanay and began telling her about Priesthood blessings. My companion finished his explanation by telling her that these blessings work based on the will of the Lord and her faith. With eyes full of tears Nanay asked that I give her a Priesthood blessing...(to be continued)
