While I was serving on the island of São Miguel, an acquaintance of mine, Sister Margaret Bizantino (who I'd gotten to know in the MTC), was serving her mission in Fall River, Massachusetts, USA. Her investigator, Maria Costa, went on vacation with her parents to Ponta Delgada, São Miguel. Maria was reading the Book of Mormon and praying about whether to get baptized on a certain day, roughly 2 weeks or so upon her return to Fall River.
I met her at church just after auxiliary meetings ended and just before sacrament meeting. I invited her to stay and hear the talks. She accepted. The talks were by our zone leaders, and the topics were baptism and the gift of the Holy Ghost.
The Spirit was very strong. As soon as the meeting was over, I turned to Maria and asked in English, "So how about your baptismal date? Are you going to do it?"
Her response: "I think I will."
About a month later, I got a photograph from Sister Bizantino of her and Maria at the Fall River chapel, with Maria in white, along with a letter saying she had indeed been baptized. It is my favorite mission story. |
