After my mission, I went back to BYU, played baseball, graduated in Public Relations, and married CAMILLE HECKMANN in 2001. After we got married, we watched the 9-11 stuff, and we both had the inclination that I needed to join the military. So I joined the National Guard in Utah. I left my new bride, went to basic training, was sent to MONTEREY, CA, to learn Mandarin Chinese at the DEFENSE LANGUAGE INSTITUTE, then went to Counter Intelligence School in ARIZONA. While in MONTEREY, we had our oldest son, ALEXANDER. After all the training, I went to work for a counter drug program with the National Guard as a Spanish linguist. I kept waiting to get deployed, and it never happened, so I went back to the DLI to learn Korean. While there, the Army brought me home early to deploy to AFGHANISTAN. Between going back to UTAH and leaving for AFGHANISTAN, my wife had twins, JACK GOLDEN and BROOKLYN CAMILLE. So my wife is at home with newborn twins and a 4 year old, and I'm at war. Actually, our marriage has never been stronger. Trials can be good, though they can really stink, too. |
