| Elder Purcell and I were serving in Nofoalii living in a hut behind the chapel. This hut was the usual, elevated up about 18 inches with a hand-hewn log floor. We had real electricity with a light and a switch! The pola were our only privacy.
The pigs would sometimes run under the hut and scratch their backs which would cause the whole hut to shake. Sometimes a herd would be having fun under it.
After dark one night, right after I turned out our light, the hut started shaking. I jumped out to chase the pig away when, the very ground I was on was shaking... my first earthquake! I was excited! I told my comp but he did'nt seem to care. The glass in the chapel broke a little and the thump of popo falling could be heard.
Th ground shook and then moved from side to side, then all was over. No one seemed to care about the earthquake but me.
I heard that it was centered in the Soloman islands and caused considerable damage.
