Comments: Judge Monte Carlson was known as a fair judge with a calm demeanor. He was also an athlete, accomplished archery hunter and fly fisherman, an enthusiastic cook as well as a loving husband, father, grandfather and a devoted disciple of Christ, demonstrated by a lifetime of service to others. He will be remembered for his eloquent public speaking, sense of humor and humility. Many feel the void left by his passing, Sunday, June 3, 2007. He was 64. Carlson was born in Burley, to Earl and Leona Peterson Carlson.
He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Taiwan and upon returning attended Brigham Young University. Later he served as mission president for three years in the Taiwan Taichung Mission. He is said to have called those years one of the defining eras of his life.
He married Diane Harkness in the Salt Lake Temple and graduated from BYU with degrees in English and Asian studies. He received his law degree from the University of Utah in 1970.
