Those President McQueen stories are hilarious and very interesting. It got me thinking into a few of my own while under Presidents Christensen and Anderson. I'll never forget the plane landing at the Donetsk airport. It was late December and of course very cold and windy and snowy. It was really bumpy on the way down. I remember the plane hitting the ground really hard, but we eventually stopped. That's when all the natives in the plane clapped and cheered for the safe landing. As we were walking out of the plane onto the pavement it was really foggy and I recall seeing one of the ground technicians using his hands to force one of the flaps back in place. I think it had frozen. A day later as we were leaving the mission president's apartment we all saw a guy getting beat up in the alley by three bigger guys to the left of the building. That wasn't funny, but Sister Christensen saying "Oh Dear!" was. Later that night as President was driving us and the assistants to the center chapel we passed a man who's car had stalled on the hill before the gas station. President quickly pulled over and had all missionaries get out of the car and help the man push his car up to the gas station. That was a good feeling. Here is this man really struggling on the side of the road, and all of a sudden come behind his car six of the Lord's servants to help push his tiny car into the gas station. I think that was the same night the assistants had us four new missionaries go with them to deliver Christmas gift baskets to some of the poorer members in the center branch. Actually, it was Christmas Eve (Dec. 24). The assistants gave us the baskets and told us to go the door, ring the doorbell, and when the members opened the door to say "S Rojestvom!" and then to hurry and leave. Not too difficult, but I'm sure we butchered the phrase. | |
