Memories of the Mayak in Makyevka 08 Jun 2008
I already tried to post this once and it didn't appear to work. If this is a repeat, please forgive me. For those of you that served in Makyevka, I wanted to see what kind of memories you have of the Mayak in Makyevka. For those who didn't serve there, the Mayak is a 14-story hotel in the center of this coal mining town. When I was there from late December 2003 to early May 2004, the Saints had sacrament meeting on the 12th floor of the building; lessons were on the fourth floor.
I remember never taking my coat off in the winter months. I don't think it was heated. I remember an open house we had for nonmembers to come and see. The elevator didn't work that day and people had to walk to the 12th floor to hear the senior couple speak. People made the walk and filled the room to capacity.

I loved the family nights we would hold each Monday on the fourth floor. It was mainly for the youth. We would bring pechenye and drinks, have a lesson and play games. Though these events usually took longer than they should have, they were tons of fun. A great bond was developed. I miss those youth. It was a great way to protect the youth over there from the countless spiritual storms that are present in Ukraine and all of Europe. One of the things I failed in was to get addresses and phone numbers of the youth to be able to contact them. (A lesson to missionaries currently serving or preparing to serve - get the addresses and numbers of the people you teach. You'll never regret it).

The branches were meeting in a renovated building near the Cheriomishky region when I left Ukraine in November 2005. If you have photos or stories of the Mayak, let them be known.
