Mission News 08 Mar 2001
Special thanks to Pte. Chidester for the following information:

We are seeing some wonderful things happening in the mission. We have been giving a lot of attention to increasing the discipline of each missionary by stressing obedience, focus, and effort. Baptisms have increased each month since last August (January being the only exception) with a high of 95 baptisms in February. We will likely achieve our mission goal of 100 monthly baptisms in this current month (March). We are using a "lista de bautismos" which is updated weekly with the names of all people in the mission that have a baptismal date. We use this list to focus our prayers and efforts to help people get to the waters of baptism. We are also working very closely with members and branch / ward leaders where among other things we are providing daily positive contact for investigators. Members are stopping by to visit, invite investigators to family home evenings, or taking them to church. This has been a tremendous help so that investigators can feel the spirit each day.

The temple looks absolutely beautiful; it is a building worthy of being presented to the Lord. The open house started last week and continues through this Saturday (March 10). There will likely be between 25 and 30 thousand people that come to the open house. Yesterday (March 6) was a particularly exciting day due to the visit of President Jorge Batlle, President of Uruguay. He came with his staff and several members of the press including television cameramen. His visit to the temple was carried in national newspapers and television. Our Area President, Elder Jay E. Jenson, hosted the tour of the temple for President Batlle. We enjoyed our time with the Uruguayan president who seemed genuinely impressed with the temple and the Church in general. We spent a lot of time with him talking about the importance of the family which is something he believes strongly. The crowds waiting to get into the temple last evening were enormous. There were approximately 500 people waiting outside at 9:00 p.m. We are anxiously looking forward to the temple dedication on March 18. President Gordon B. Hinckley and Elder Dallin H. Oaks will be coming.
