Comments: Robert E. Chambers, a religion instructor at BYU-Idaho, has been called as a mission president in the Utah Salt Lake City South Mission.
He will report to the Provo Missionary Training Center June 22 for four to five days of pre-mission training.
His wife, Robin, and 13-year-old son, Sam, will be accompanying him. Robin Sue Chambers received her own call as a missionary and companion to the mission president.
The Salt Lake South Mission has about 200 missionaries, but Robert E. Chambers said he would have somewhere between 200 and 250 missionaries when he arrives in June.
Robert E. Chambers said he was surprised at the call. He said when a man is called as mission president, there is a gap between receiving the call and knowing where you will serve.
Robert E. Chambers said prior to receiving the call, he was too focused on the physical location.
Not long after the call came, he learned that the call was to preside over the missionaries called to that place, not a geographical area.
“That’s where my missionaries are. I would have it no other way,” Robert E. Chambers said.
Robin Sue Chambers said the call surprised her.
“When we received the location I was just stunned,” said Robin Sue Chambers. “We were expecting and prepared to go a lot further away.”
She also said it did not take her long to know their call was right.
Robert E. Chambers also said his son is excited to go, and will be able to graduate from Madison High School when they return.
Robert E. Chambers said BYU-I is supportive of him going on a mission. Robin Sue Chambers said they are thrilled and excited.
Robert E. Chambers was born in Ogden, Utah, but moved to Pocatello, Idaho at a young age, and has lived in Rexburg and worked as an instructor for two years at BYU-I.
Before that, he spent 25 years in the public sector in Idaho.
He is currently serving as an Area Authority in the Fifth Quorum of the Seventy.
He has also served as a young men’s president, bishop, and stake president and as a full-time 19 year-old missionary in the Milan, Italy Mission.
He said that he has loved all of his callings and is anticipating loving this one.
