State Department warns Americans against traveling to Venezuela
Tuesday, December 10, 2002 (approximately 6:30 PM Eastern Time)
WASHINGTON - The State Department warned U.S. citizens Tuesday to put off all travel to Venezuela and said Americans already there should consider leaving.
The agency said the political and security situation in the country was deteriorating, accompanied by severe shortages of goods and services.
An opposition general strike against President Hugo Chavez was in its ninth day and has caused some deaths and injuries. It has paralyzed the crucial oil industry, which provides 70 percent of the country's export revenue and is a key supplier to the United States.
The state department said it had authorized the voluntary departure of family members and non-emergency personnel from the U.S. Embassy in Venezuela.
The statement said further violence was possible.
"Fuel and basic food supplies are critically low and ground transportation throughout the country is operating on a very limited basis," the department said.
