Fernand Simoes 30 Mar 2013
To any missionaries who served during the Walker/Roueche years and knew Elder Fernand Simoes, I would like you to know that he and his wife plan to be in Salt Lake City next week, from April 1 through the 7th (2013). Anyone who would like to see Elder Simoes is invited to join us for lunch at Bruges on Thursday, April 4th at noon. We will be at the one downtown on 3rd South between 3rd and 4th West. He would love to see any mission alums who remember him. Call me at the contact number listed on my profile on the mission website if you have any questions. Thanks.

President Walker Scrapbook 05 Feb 2013
President G. Perrin Walker will be attending Stake Conference in Lille this February. My mother, Kaye Johnson-Janda has been asked to compile a stampin-up scrapbook for him of members and missionaries from when he served as mission president. If you served under president Walker or have pictures of members/missionaries from that era, (1980s-1990s) please scan and e-mail them to me. Jeanne Liddle Jackson, cantabile45@gmail.com. Please identify people by name in photos if possible. She especially wants photos of President and Sister Walker, as there are few available from the local members. Sadly, many members from that era have passed away.
Thanks,
Jeanne (formerly Soeur Liddle)

Senior Missionary Opportunities 01 Mar 2012
Brethren and Sisters, March 1, 2012
I have received a request from the mission presidents in the Democratic Republic of Congo (Kinshasa and Lubumbashi) to put out word to you, former missionaries in French-speaking countries, that they have a very pressing need for senior missionaries with your skills. Below is the letter from Pres. Brent Jameson in Kinshasa which better explains the current situation.
You knew this day was coming, didn’t you…the day you would go back to the mission field when the harvest was going to be so much greater than in those days when you learned how to turn soil and plant seeds.
These missions are looking to fill very immediate needs. Many of you are probably in the range of retiring in 5 to 10 years. Some of you, though, may have been waiting for such an invitation and can act on it right away. For the rest, look again at your timetable and see where you can accelerate your mission plans so you can serve when you are still in good health and can reap a maximum of mission blessings. Earlier really is better!
Please contact these brethren directly about your interest in serving and they will guide you through the missionary application process so they can earmark your papers to come work with them in the Congo. Of course, the General Authorities will have the last say about where you will be prophetically called to labor, but a mission president’s request carries great weight with them these days.
All the best to you! And for those of you who head groups of other mission alumni, diffusez-le librement!

As a former missionary in France (‘66-‘68) I spent my entire adult life hoping to return there to fill a mission with my wife as a senior couple. When the time came, we were recruited to serve in Lyon, France in a young adult outreach program. However, the Lord intervened and sent us to the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2009 to serve in Lubumbashi with around 22 young African missionaries, which soon grew to around 60. When Lubumbashi was organized as the second mission in the DRC we were sent to re-open Burundi, a country where scores of people were already studying with the Book of Mormon and pleading for the Church to come to them. We are so grateful the Lord was in charge of our life and sent us to Africa. The blessings we’ve received as senior missionaries have gone beyond us to our children and grandchildren back home.
We now preside over the DR Congo Kinshasa Mission and have a crying need, as does the Lubumbashi Mission, for more senior couples, especially for those with a French background. We have cities where the couples shepherd young American and African missionaries as well as provide needed leadership for branches. This service is beyond fulfilling and we encourage all who may be inspired to serve at this time to counsel with their priesthood leaders. If your French seems to have gone dormant and your spouse has no experience with the language, don’t let that intimidate you. We assure you, it will work.
Please contact us for more information. We invite you to join with us as soon as possible. You are needed.

Additional Information about DRCongo Missions (in one of the Lord’s Tropical Paradises!)

The DR Congo Kinshasa Mission consists of the following countries:

-- DRC (the southwestern part of the country, mostly Kinshasa)
-- Republic of Congo
-- Cameroon (Elder Jerry Thompson -- BBM ’76-’78 -- and Sister Thompson go home March 16th and there are no
replacements for them as yet).
-- Central African Republic (currently one branch but no missionaries)
-- Gabon (no Church presence yet)
-- Equatorial Guinea (no Church presence yet)

We need two couples immediately and one more in July. We appreciate any help you can give us.

Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) Lubumbashi
This mission is the east one-half of the DRC and the tiny country of Burundi. We do not allow our missionaries to go outside of the city limits of Bujumbura (capital of Burundi) except to go to Uvira DRC where we have a thriving branch. Burundi is actually the cherry of our mission and is very interesting and beautiful on the banks of the Lake Tanganyika and below some beautiful mountains. We have an opening right now for a couple. One or both of the couple need to speak French.
Thank you for taking the time to spread the word. Our need is great.

Charleroi parade summer 1997 24 Nov 2011
For any missionaries who served in Charleroi in the summer of 1997, this video may be of interest. It's a television program dedicated to the big parade that the local members put on in Charleroi during that time. I had left the mission by then, but I recognized several people in the video. I'm not sure who originally uploaded the video, but if they see this message, thanks!

Here's the video:

Sister Anita Arrigona 06 Sep 2011
Soeur Anita Arrigona, wife of the late President James S. Arrigona, passed away on August 31, 2011, in the home of one of her daughters in LA, surrounded by her children and most of her grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are pending, probably to be held in Salt Lake City. As Sharon Worrell Wehle has so well stated, "This is bittersweet to hear of her passing as we look forward to a reunion that is devoted to so many memories of them and the influence they had on so many. As one brother has already said..."at least they are together"... and what a glorious reunion that must have been!"

Mission records under Eccles administration 22 Jul 2011
Hi everyone,
This message is for any missionary serving in the Belgium Brussels Mission from 1994 to 1997. The Church History Library in Salt Lake City never received any records for our mission during this time period. The records that were kept in the office were never submitted. That makes me sad. People come into the library for many reasons, but sometimes it is to access their old mission records where they can look up transfer information, who and where they served, names of people they baptized, etc. Or, they will look up the information for their father or grandfather because they're working on personal or family histories. But because the records were never submitted during the entire course of my mission, I can't do that and neither will my children or grandchildren Unfortunately, the same will be true for many of you.

If any of you, particularly those who worked in the office, have any idea what may have happened to the records, please let me know. The library staff has contacted President Eccles. He doesn't have anything. I'm going to contact the new mission homes as well to find out if they might have them stored somewhere.

Worst case scenario, I know the library is always looking for donations of missionary journals to document the history of the Church in specific areas. In my case, I'd have to request that they restricted until long after I'm dead, but I guess that's an option too.

Please contact me if you have any ideas or suggestions.

My email address is nmel2003@gmail.com. Home number 801.797.9734

I baptized them and would love to see them if they are still alive.
